My grandfather’s life

by Jill White, 13

Our English teacher asked us to write 300 words about an interesting person in our family. My grandfather is 92 and I love listening to my grandfather’s stories about his long life, so I am writing about him.

My grandfather, Ben, has had a lot of adventures in his life. He grew up in a small village and left school at 12. His mother and father were very poor because they were too old to work, so he needed to earn money. He worked for a man who made things from wood, like cupboards and tables and beds. He loved the work and soon became very good. The owner of the company paid him well for his work, so Ben could pay for everything for his parents. After five years, the family had a new house and a large garden to grow fruit and vegetables. When Ben was sure that his mother and father had no problems with money, he decided to leave his job and see the world.

His village was near a large port, and one day he said goodbye to his family and went to the port to find new job. Many of the captains of the ships at the port wanted person who was good with wood, and he got a job on a large ship very quickly.

In the next few years, he travelled to North America and South America, to Africa, and finally to Asia. Sometimes he sailed on small ships and he had to learn new jobs like cooking and sailing the ship. Then he got a job on a steamship and learnt how to look after engines. Over the next few years, he worked on many steamships. He never learnt from books or teachers, but slowly he became an engineer.

When he finally came back to his home country after 10 years at sea, he got job in car factory. He started as an engineer in the factory. He learnt so quickly that he became the manager two years after joining the company.

I have now written 300 words, so I have to stop. But there is a lot more to say about my interesting grandfather.
